Quarantine may lead to a decrease in electricity consumption in March by 8% - Ukrenergo

Since the introduction of quarantine on March 12, due to the threat of the epidemic of the coronavirus COVID-19, electricity consumption in Ukraine has decreased by almost 4%: from 411 million kWh before the introduction of quarantine on March 11 to 395.6 kWh on March 19. This was reported by the press service.

It is noted that in addition to quarantine measures, such as limiting the operation of public utilities, shopping and entertainment centers, service enterprises, educational institutions, limiting the production of industrial enterprises, etc., warm spring weather contributes to the reduction of electricity consumption. So, the average daily temperature during March 11-19 in 2020 was 1 °C higher than in the same period of 2019 5.7 °C versus 4.7 °C. At the same time, the average daily consumption in the corresponding period of 2019 was higher by almost 7%.

Further spring warming, as well as a gradual decrease in heat supply volumes upon reaching an average daily temperature of + 8 °C over a certain period, will contribute to a decrease in power consumption in the future.

As a result, in March it is forecasted that the monthly volume of consumption would decrease by 8.2% compared to the same period in 2019. The decrease in the daily maximum consumption is up to 18,300 MW compared to 20,100 MW in March 2019.

One of the main consequences of reducing consumption is the limitation of electricity imports, electricity generation from traditional generation and renewable energy sources during peak loads in the power system. These measures will be applied to comply with the boundaries of operational security of the Ukrainian energy system.
