The Department of State imposes new sanctions against Nord Stream 2

The US Department of State has released a statement by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, which refers to the decision to impose additional sanctions against Nord Stream 2, Evropeyska Pravda reports.

The Department of State has filed with the US Congress a report on the sanctions list of two vessels and the Russian-related company Transadria Ltd. involved in the project. The report is presented following the European Energy Security Act 2019 (PEESA).

Transadria Ltd. will be subject to sanctions under PEESA, and her vessel, the Marlin, will be classified as a blocked property,” Blinken said, without providing details on the second vessel.

He stressed that in total, the US administration has already imposed sanctions on 8 people and identified 17 of their vessels as blocked property under PEESA in connection with Nord Stream 2.

Blinken also said the administration continues to work with Germany and other allies and partners "to reduce the risks the pipeline poses for Ukraine and NATO and EU countries on the front lines, and to counter Russia's harmful activities, including in the energy sector."

As a reminder, on July 21, 2021, the United States and Germany announced that they had officially agreed to complete the construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, having published a joint declaration with Ukraine's promises.

Last week, the German Federal Grid Agency temporarily suspended the certification process for Nord Stream 2 AG as an independent operator of Nord Stream 2.

Earlier, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the West must choose between Russian gas and support for Ukraine.
