US quits Paris Climate Agreement

In 2017, Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement for the first time. In 2019, Washington officially notified the UN of the start of the exit procedure. The US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement took effect on Wednesday, November 4, Deutsche Welle reports.

As the reason for withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, Trump called "unfair economic restrictions that it imposes on American workers, businessmen, and taxpayers." He also stressed that this step was being taken in American companies' interests working in the field of mining.

The United States became the first country to withdraw from the agreement. At the same time, the US State Department indicated that it did not intend to abandon its full set of "political options" and did not rule out a return to the agreement if it succeeded in achieving more favorable conditions for itself.

The Paris Climate Agreement was adopted on December 12, 2015, at the UN Climate Conference (COP21). It was signed by representatives of 196 countries of the world. It replaced the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2020, which approved commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions only for developed countries.

All states, regardless of the degree of economic development, took on new obligations to protect the climate: “to achieve the global peak of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible” and subsequently to intensively reduce them, to achieve a balance between the volume of gases emitted into the atmosphere in the second half of the century, and absorbed naturally, that is, seas and forests.
