The EBRD proposes to postpone the launch of a new electricity market by no more than 3-6 months

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development confirms its position on the need to postpone the launch of the electricity market from July 1, 2019 for 3-6 months to prepare better. This was announced by the Senior Adviser on External Relations of the EBRD Anton Usov.

“If to postpone reform for a year, then interest in the market will disappear especially among external players who bring not only money, but also technology. A stitch in time saves nine: postponing the launch of the market for a year is an excessive pause”, Usov said.

One of the goals of the electricity market reform is its integration into the European market and the improvement of the country's energy security, therefore, from this point of view, it is also desirable to avoid unnecessary delay in launching the reform, said Usov.

Recall that on June 10, the President Volodymyr Zelensky introduced two draft laws to the Verkhovna Rada – on the electricity market and on alternative energy sources. The draft law No.10376 regarding changes to the law “On the electricity market” provides for the launching delay of a new model for one year – till July 1, 2020.

Earlier it was reported that the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development agrees with other international organizations that Ukraine needs to postpone the launch of the wholesale electricity market due to the unreadiness of its implementation.
