During the 2019 repair campaign, the active zone of unit No.5 of Zaporizhzhia NPP was fully loaded with Westinghouse fuel. Three more ZNPP units – the first, third and fourth – now have a mixed load. This was reported by the press service.
“Thus, today in the active zone of ZNPP power units there is the following number of TVS-WR: 163 – on the fifth, 84 (that is half) - on each the third and fourth and already 126 – on the first (which is currently under scheduled preventive repair)”, - the message says.
The advantages of this fuel are attributed to the Zaporizhzhia NPP and the absence of design restrictions in relation to power change cycles. Such a fuel is more flexible for use in shunting modes. At power unit with Westinghouse fuel it is planned to implement a 1.5% increase in power level.
But the primary task: to transfer the use of Westinghouse fuel into commercial operation at certain power units of Zaporizhzhia NPP. In 2020, this will happen at unit No.5. Also, next year it is expected that TVS-WR will be fully loaded in the active zone of power unit No.1, and in 2021, power units No.3, 4. One year later, subject to successful trial operation, the use of alternative fuel will go into industrial.
The next step after putting Westinghouse fuel into commercial operation at ZNPP units is a joint work with the supplier, aimed at improving economic characteristics, calculating longer loads, which can be extended for another 20-40 effective days.
In the future, the introduction of longer-duration fuel campaigns, due to which the station will receive a higher installed capacity utilization factor.
Recall that in 2018, power unit No.3 of the South Ukrainian NPP was the first power unit in Ukraine, which began to operate exclusively on Westinghouse fuel. During the preventive maintenance, which ended July 16, 2019, 163 Westinghouse modified fuel assemblies (TVS-WR) were loaded into the active zone of the power unit.
