Gerus initiated a draft law to restrict electricity imports and introduce a special tax on energy resources from the Russian Federation

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities, together with his colleagues, registered draft law No.5208 "On measures to strengthen Ukraine's energy security," he wrote in his Telegram channel.

The draft law provides for a consistent approach to reduce dependence on the supply of goods from the Russian Federation, including through the introduction of special taxes on the corresponding supplies of diesel, liquefied gas, gasoline, and various grades of coal. It is also expected to give powers to the Regulator to restrict or prohibit electricity imports from Russia, the explanatory note says.

The funds collected with a help of the special tax are supposed to be used to pay the FIT (to make importers from the Russian Federation pay it, and avoid increasing electricity tariffs for Ukrainian consumers).

It is also proposed to adopt acts on the introduction of special taxes on anthracite, coal, petroleum products originating from the Russian Federation, as well as provide the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine with a report on how the Cabinet of Ministers used the tool to reduce dependence on imports from Russia.

To recap, on February 15, during the Ukraine 30 forum, Andrii Gerus said that in early March, when the situation on the electricity market stabilizes, the possibility of imposing restrictions on electricity imports, in particular from the Russian Federation, will be considered.
