Electricity imports grew by 2.4 times in October

In October 2020, electricity imports amounted to 128.8 million kWh, which is 2.4 times more than in September of the same year and is growing only due to an increase in imports to the Burshtyn TPP islands. This figure practically corresponds to the value of imports in April 2020 (150.6 million kWh), the press service of Ukrenergo reports, Kosatka.Media reports.

Electricity has not been imported to the IPS of Ukraine from Belarus since May and from Russia since April 2020.

Over the past month, the volume of imports from Slovakia increased significantly – by 2.4 times (up to 105.1 million kWh) and Hungary – by 2.5 times (up to 23.2 million kWh). At the same time, from Romania, on the contrary, it decreased by 2.1 times to 0.43 million kWh.

The total electricity imports for 10 months amounted to 1.99 billion kWh, 60.5% from Slovakia, and 24.8% from Hungary.

To ensure the Burshtyn TPP Island's operational safety, electricity imports from Slovakia were limited by 14.95 million kWh, from Hungary – by 7.3 million kWh, and Romania – by 1.3 million kWh.

Electricity exports in October 2020 amounted to 497.3 million kWh, which is 6.3% more than in September of the same year.

Hungary continues to maintain the largest share in total exports – 47.4%.

In October, exports to the aforementioned country amounted to 235.7 million kWh, 12.3 times less than in September. At the same time, the share in total exports of Poland increased from 23% to 29.9%; the total volume amounted to 148.8 million kWh (+ 38% compared to September) and Romania – from 9.2% to 19, 5% (up to 96.9 million kWh, which is 2.3 times more than in September).

Besides, the export of electricity to Moldova increased significantly – from 0.040 million kWh to 14.9 million.

Also, in October 2020, compared to last month, no electricity was exported to Belarus.

To ensure the Burshtyn TPP Island's operational safety, electricity exports to Hungary were limited by 58.4 million kWh, Slovakia – by 38.3 million kWh, and Romania – by 21.8 million kWh.

The total electricity export for 10 months of 2020 exceeded the import by 1.97 times and amounted to 3.94 billion kWh. Compared to the same period in 2019, total electricity exports remain 23% lower than last year (for 10 months of 2019 - 5.13 billion kWh).

“Since July, there has been a significant trend towards further growth in the monthly volume of exports and imports of electricity and a gradual recovery of pre-quarantined volumes. This can be explained by the activation of external electricity markets, the gradual growth of consumption, and the adaptation of the countries' economies to work under quarantine conditions,” Ukrenergo said.
