A criminal proceeding was instituted because of damage to power unit No.1 at Khmelnytska NPP

The Ministry of Energy and Environmental Protection has created a Commission to investigate the causes of damage to the power unit of Khmelnytska NPP. According to preliminary information, the cause was the ingress of an external object into the cooling system of turbogenerator No.1. This was reported by the press service.

“According to the results of the meeting, Khmelnytska NPP was instructed to carry out an independent examination of external objects that were discovered during the dismantling of the turbogenerator No.1”, the statement said. 

On August 14, 2019, power unit No.1 of Khmelnytska NPP of the State Enterprise NNEGC Energoatom, after a planned    medium repairs (257 days), was transferred to emergency repair due to damage to the turbogenerator with the request for emergency repair.  

Pursuant to the decisions of the Commission, Energoatom developed and approved the emergency repair work schedule for power unit No.1 and updated t SE NNEGC Energoatom repair schedule.

Recall that the launch of unit No.1 of Khmelnytska NPP was postponed for three months due to the detection of damage during launch operations.

Earlier it was reported that the SNRIU extended the life of Khmelnytska NPP power unit No.1 over the design period, by 10 years, until December 13, 2028.
