Due to temperature increase, the power grid may experience an emergency situation

Due to the record air temperature indicators, a threatening situation has developed in the power grid with the provision of a balance between the production and consumption of electricity.  The peak power consumption was 17935 MW.

To ensure a balance in the power grid with an increase in air temperature and peak consumption, appropriate reserve maneuvering capacities, in particular, TPP units, are provided with fuel.

The power grid of Ukraine works with absent normative reserves of capacity at power units of thermal power plants of generating companies.  Now, due to the lack of coal, there are 7 TPP units (3 – DTEK and 4 – Centrenergo) with a total installed capacity of 2.857 MW.  For 10 days of heat, coal reserves in the warehouses of thermal power plants have decreased by almost 10%.

Another 8 TPP units were put into emergency repair (6 – Centrenergo, 1 – Donbasenergo and 1 – DTEK Energo) with a capacity of 2320 MW.

“With a further increase in temperature, the tendency of the output of TPP units to be in emergency repair and the lack of fuel at thermal power plants in the power grid, an emergency situation will develop”, Ukrenergo noted.

It means that Ukrenergo will not have the tools to cover the maximum loads in the power grid.  In such cases, the company may use outage graphics to ensure the integrity of the power system.

To resolve the issue, it is necessary to speed up the repair of Trypilska, Zmiivska TPPs of PJSC Centrenergo and Slavianska TPP of Donbasenergo, or the inclusion of gas-oil units of TPPs into operation.

For further reliable operation of the power grid, it is also necessary to ensure the stability of coal supplies, in particular, to Kryvyi Rih and Luhansk TPP of DTEK Energo.

Ukrenergo has already appealed to the NSDC with a corresponding letter.
