NPC Ukrenergo reports that according to operational data, electricity consumption in Ukrainian power system in August practically reached the level of consumption in 2019 and amounts to 9.364 billion kWh, which is only 0.01% less than last year (9.370 billion kWh).
Of all consumer groups in August, only the population demonstrates a clear increase in consumption by 5.7% (2.643 billion kWh in August 2020 against 2.501 billion kWh in August 2019). The industry used 2.9% less electricity in August than last year (4187 billion kWh versus 4312 billion kWh, respectively). A decrease in electricity consumption compared to August 2019 in the industrial group is recorded in the machine-building industry (-12%), metallurgy (-6%) and the fuel industry (-3%). At the same time, electricity consumption increased in the food and processing industry, chemical and petrochemical, building materials industry and others, which consumed electricity in August by an average of 5% more than last year.
In general, the dynamics of electricity consumption by industry in 2020 clearly reflects the impact of the pandemic and related national quarantine measures on the level of consumption and, accordingly, the functioning of various sectors of the economy.
At the same time, despite the trend towards a gradual approach of consumption to the level of last year's indicators, it is possible to predict a further increase in electricity consumption, associated primarily with seasonality (a decrease in air temperature), as well as partial adaptation of economic sectors to work under quarantine conditions.
