Parliament supported the draft law on nuclear safety

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the second reading and as a whole approved the draft law “On Amending Certain Laws of Ukraine Regarding the Safety of the Use of Nuclear Energy” (No.2373), Interfax-Ukraine reports.

The draft law aimed at renewing and strengthening the legal status and independent functioning of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate (SNRIU).

Earlier, head of the parliament’s energy committee, Andriy Gerus, said that the adoption of the draft law would allow Energoatom to attract additional loan funds of €200 million for security programs.

The renewal of SNRIU independence is a condition of a number of international documents, in particular, the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the Strategic Energy Partnership between Ukraine and the EU together with the European Atomic Energy Community, as well as the agreements between Ukraine and the Atomic Energy Community regarding the provision of a loan to NNEGC Energoatom.
