Ukraine and Great Britain plan cooperation in the energy sector

The Ministry of Energy said that Ukraine and the UK are planning cooperation in the energy sector. In particular, the states plan to cooperate in reforming the coal industry, developing renewable energy and in the context of decarbonizing the economy as a whole.

This was discussed during the meeting of Acting Minister of Energy of Ukraine Olha Buslavets and Minister of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy of Great Britain Kwasi Kwarteng, which took place on September 14 via an online conference.

Olha Buslavets noted that Ukraine follows European and global development trends, in particular, within the framework of the gradual transformation of the national economy and energy towards carbon neutral development.

“Ukraine has begun a dialogue with the EU within the framework of the implementation of the Green Deal and the European Green Agreement, which should turn Europe into the first climate-neutral continent by 2050,” said the Head of the Ministry.

She said that now, in order to update the goals and vectors of development, the process of updating the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035 with a prospect until 2050 has begun.

At the same time, Ukraine is already moving towards the development of "green" energy and is interested in joint projects.

“For us it would be very important to help the UK government in the implementation of Energy Storage projects, which are important for our energy system and the further development of green generation,” she said.

Olha Buslavets paid attention to the plans for the development of hydrogen energy in Ukraine.

“Ukraine has significant potential for “green” hydrogen. We have begun work on the preparation of a roadmap for the development of hydrogen energy. By the end of the year, it is planned to start preparing the Strategy for the development of this area in Ukraine. We look forward to effective cooperation in the implementation of key measures for the development and integration of hydrogen technologies, in particular, it will include the development of a hydrogen concept and the implementation of pilot projects,” Olha Buslavets said.

Separately, the parties discussed the transformation of coal regions, in which the UK has achieved significant success.

According to her, Ukraine is considering the possibility of participating in the Energy Free Alliance to attract investments to start new projects in the territories of coal monotowns.

Earlier it was reported that Ukraine and Italy are deepening cooperation in the energy sector.
