Ukraine has signed a contract for the disposal of radioactive waste

Ukraine has signed contracts under the NATO project for the disposal of radioactive waste that is stored in a burial ground in Kirovograd region at the Tsybulevo facility of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The document was signed in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Germany is the leading country in this project, another of the donors is Norway. The executive support and procurement agency is the NATO agency, which is responsible for all aspects of project management prior to its completion. State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management acted as a coordinator and beneficiary in support of the work on radioactive waste management.

The project is planned to be implemented in 18 months, and its cost will be 1.5 million euros.

The project will be implemented in several stages. The first is the radiation study of the object, the study of historical information of the site with radiological and environmental studies. The second is the preparation of a technical solution, the pretreatment of radioactive waste, their extraction, conditioning, packaging in containers and transportation to disposal sites. The third is the restoration of the territories of the object, the renewal of the territories to their primary state.

The project should contribute to the rehabilitation of the territory in which radioactive waste is now stored, as well as eliminate the threat of illegal distribution of radioactive materials outside the facility and reduce the negative impact on the environment and the population of the region.

Earlier it was reported that by the end of 2019 a new safe confinement (NSC) should be commissioned at the Chernobyl NPP.
