In July, the volume of imports was the lowest since the launch of the electricity market

The total volume of electricity imports in July 2021 extended the June trend and remains very low – 1,200,000 kWh. This is the lowest figure since the launch of the new market in July 2019, Ukrenergo says.

The total export of electricity amounted to 366.3 million kWh, which is 297 times more than the volume of imports. This ratio is explained by the fact that electricity in July 2021 was imported from only one EU country and its absence into the UES of Ukraine trade zone (from Russia, Belarus and Moldova).

For 7 months of 2021, the volume of electricity exports exceeds imports by almost 2.2 times – 131 million kWh against 987 million kWh.

The volume of imports in July 2021 amounted to 0.01% of the total electricity consumption (gross), or 0.3% of the total consumption in the Burshtyn TPP island trade zone. There was no electricity import to the UES of Ukraine trade zone in June following the decision of NEURC (Resolution No.853 dated May 26, 2021).

In general, electricity imports in July 2021 were carried out for 28 hours from 744 and only from Slovakia. Compared to June 2021, the total volume of imports decreased 3.5 times from 4.4 to 1.2 million kWh.

For 7 months of 2021 more electricity was imported from Belarus – 522.6 million kWh (53% of the total) and Slovakia – 258.4 million kWh (26%).

Electricity exports in July 2021 in comparison with the previous month increased by only 1.1% from 362.4 million kWh to 366.3 million kWh.

Most of all in June was exported from the Burshtyn TPP island – 67% of the total.

Compared to June 2021, exports from the Burshtyn TPP island increased by 4.2% from 235.9 million kWh to 245.8 million kWh. First of all, export volumes to Hungary (+ 6.3%) and Romania (+ 2.1%) increased. At the same time, exports to Slovakia decreased by 0.9%.

The level of exports from the Burshtyn TPP island trade zone was influenced by the planned repair of the 400 kV overhead line Burshtyn TPP - Mukachevo from 12 to 25 July 2021. In particular, therefore, export supplies to the EU countries during the execution of work were reduced to the level of 150-350 MW, depending on the consumption in the trade zone (350 MW mainly at night and 150 MW at peak hours).

Exports from the UES of Ukraine, compared to the previous month, decreased by 4.8% from 126.6 million kWh to 120.5 million kWh. The reason for this is a significant decrease in the volume of commercial exports to Poland (-18.8%). While exports to Moldova, on the contrary, increased by 47.4%

In just 7 months of 2021, electricity was exported to Hungary – 976.7 million kWh (45.8% of the total) and Poland – 534.1 million kWh (25.1%).
