The US Energy Department says Ukrainian nuclear power plants are to reduce the EU's dependence on Russian energy

The United States and Ukraine are working on securely integrating Ukrainian electricity grids into the European energy system, which would markedly reduce the EU's dependence on Russian coal and gas, Assistant Secretary of Energy for Foreign Affairs Andrew Light said, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"Nuclear power generation capacity in Ukraine alone could reduce Europe's dependence on Russian coal and gas once Ukraine can export electricity to Europe," said the Assistant Energy Minister.

He also said that the US took other steps to reduce the effects of the war. In this regard, three approaches are being implemented: in addition to “desynchronizing” the Ukrainian power grid with the Russian one and connecting it to the European one, this includes diversifying gas supplies to Europe, including through LNG, as well as an accelerated transition to renewable sources.
