Japan decided to dump purified radioactive water from Fukushima into the ocean – media

The Japanese government has decided to dump purified radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean, Interfax-Ukraine reports concerning the Kyodo agency.

Last year, a government commission recommended doing so, but the decision sparked widespread dissatisfaction, in particular among representatives of the fishing industry, who feared that consumers would refuse any seafood caught in the area.

According to the NHK TV channel, water waste from Fukushima is currently stored in specialized reservoirs, they are cleaned but still contain radioactive tritium.

“Sources say the government wants to reduce the content of this element in line with international standards. And then, in two years, it will start dumping water into the ocean,” the TV channel said in a statement.

In March 2011, an earthquake hit the northeastern coast of Japan that triggered a tsunami. A giant wave struck the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, which led to the largest accident of this kind since the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. At the Fukushima-1 NPP, the reactor core melted down at three power units at once.

To recap, Japan launched a nuclear reactor capable of withstanding a direct plane crash.

As reported, the radioactive water from Fukushima will be poured into the sea.
