America prepares new sanctions against Nord Stream 2

The United States Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, offers new sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG, which owns the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, reports Hromadske with reference to the German publication Handelsblatt.

He held meetings with representatives of both chambers of the American parliament – the House of Representatives and the Senate, to discuss the issue of containing the construction of the gas pipeline.

“Further sanctions are supported by both parties. Despite the election campaign, the law can be accepted quickly,” he said.

What kind of sanctions are being said is not yet known. However, Handelsblatt reporters suggest that this could be a fine for companies that will supply Nord Stream 2 AG with special equipment for laying pipes or companies that will receive Russian gas.

Berlin expects the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline by the end of the second half of 2020.

Nord Stream 2 is a project of a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea, for gas supplies to Central Europe.

Recall, the Swiss company Allseas, which is engaged in the laying of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, announced the suspension of work due to US sanctions. The head of the Russian company Gazprom, Alexey Miller, said that Russia did not have technological obstacles to complete the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

According to him, the gas pipeline could be completed by the end of 2020 with the help of  Akademik Chersky ship.

It was previously reported that the EU court rejected the Nord Stream 2 lawsuit against the gas directive.
