Biden and Merkel issue joint statement on Nord Stream 2

German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Russia that Europe will take "active action" if Moscow violates Ukraine's rights as a gas transmission state. This statement was made by Merkel during a joint press conference with US President Joe Biden, which took place on Thursday at the White House, Voice of America reports.

During the press conference, both leaders paid significant attention to the Nord Stream 2 issue and also expressed support for Ukraine.

“Our conviction is that Ukraine should remain a gas transit country... We will actively act if Russia does not respect the rights of Ukraine as a transit state,” Merkel said.

Answering the question about exactly what actions will be taken, Merkel stressed that these actions will be of a pan-European nature and recalled that such an instrument as sanctions had already been applied against Russia due to the annexation of Crimea and aggression in Donbas.

“Chancellor Merkel and I are fully united in our belief that Russia should not be allowed to use energy as a weapon to coerce or threaten its neighbours,” Biden said.

Merkel mentioned that the assessments of the United States and Germany regarding Nord Stream 2 are somewhat different. "Good friends may disagree," Biden said.

During the press conference, Biden noted that Nord Stream 2 was 90% ready when he was elected president, so he considered it more expedient not to impose new sanctions, but to cooperate with Germany on developing steps in case Russia "blackmails” Ukraine.

Before the meeting between Biden and Merkel, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed them. In a post on Twitter, he urged Biden and Merkel not to trade "values, principles and security" for "economic interests." “No decision on Ukraine without Ukraine,” he added.

To recap, the European Court dismissed Germany's appeal on the Opal gas pipeline.

Earlier, the operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline announced that it would be completed by the end of the summer.
