Halushchenko: Ukrainian thermal power plants stop working due to record growth in gas prices

Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko, during an hour of questions to the government, said that Ukrainian combined heat and power plants (CHPs) significantly reduced the production of electricity, and those that partially use coal stopped working, Ekonomichna Pravda reports.

He noted that the current heating season "will undoubtedly pass under the influence of the global energy crisis."

In particular, we are talking about record prices for gas, which reached $2 thousand per thousand cubic meters, as well as coal, which has already crossed the price of $300 and set a price record.

Halushchenko mentions that the price of electricity is almost four times higher in European countries than in Ukraine - UAH 10-12 per kW.

Price records also affected Ukrainian producers, which caused the country to lose electricity volumes.

“Combined heat and power plants operating on gas have significantly reduced electricity production, and, accordingly, this increases the combustion of coal. For example, producers producing 25% of electricity from hydrocarbons in the country stopped production due to gas prices,” he said.

According to the minister, this is a loss in the energy system of 3000 MW of installed capacity. This increases the load on the power system: "We must find ways to compensate for this additional electricity, which is not being generated."

Halushchenko spoke about the steps taken by the Ministry of Energy in this direction. The plan for coal accumulation was updated, the forecast balance was adjusted, in which the volume of consumption increased by 4%. This surplus will be covered by nuclear power.

To recap the situation with coal reserves is not improving.

Earlier, the Ministry of Energy stated that they did not see any problems with coal stocks.
