Polish Foreign Ministry: Russia uses Nord Stream 2 to blackmail Ukraine and Europe

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau says that the Russian authorities are making it clear that they will use Nord Stream 2 as an instrument of political blackmail on Ukraine, Evropeyska Pravda reports, citing Polish Radio.

“Russia is signalling that it will use the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as an instrument of political blackmail against Ukraine and Central Europe,” the minister said.

“For 18 years, all Polish governments have believed that Nord Stream is an instrument of Russian sabotage, designed to break the unity of the West, the European Union and NATO,” Rau added.

On July 21 the United States and Germany announced that they had officially agreed to complete the construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, having published a joint declaration with promises to Ukraine.

The other day, the head of the Christian Democratic Union and candidate for Chancellor of Germany, Armin Laschet, threatened Russia with sanctions if the project was used against Ukraine.

The Polish state oil and gas company PGNiG has applied to be included in the certification procedure for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline operator. The results of the procedure determine whether the pipeline owner will receive a privileged position in the European gas market.

Earlier, members of the European Parliament issued an open statement criticizing the recent agreement between the US and Germany on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
