“We hope that Nord Stream 2 will not be completed” – Pompeo

The United States hopes that Nord Stream 2 will not be completed, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“We hope that Nord Stream 2 will not be completed and we are working to build a coalition to prevent this. We hope that the German government will also come to this assessment, ” he said.

According to him, Nord Stream 2, from the US point of view, makes the EU dependent on Russian gas and harms Ukraine. Pompeo also linked the topic of the gas pipeline to the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Against the background of the situation with Navalny, a discussion about the future of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project began in Germany – many politicians spoke in favor of making it the subject of sanctions against Russia due to the politician's poisoning case. Merkel, in turn, insists that there should be no action at the national level, and the EU should formulate a single answer and a single decision on what the sanctions should be and whether they will affect the gas pipeline project.
