From October 1, Moldova will buy Russian gas by $15 cheaper – at $220 per thousand cubic meters. This was stated by Moldovagaz chairman Vadim Cheban, reports European Truth, referring to Newsmaker.
Cheban also noted that from January 1, 2020, the purchase price for Moldova may fall even further. He specified that about the discount amount will be known in December.
Cheban was asked why Moldova buys gas at $235, while spot prices on exchanges do not exceed $180, and Ukraine in the third quarter of this year buys gas at an average of $170.
He replied that the low gas price in the second and third quarters, when low consumption is recorded, is not so important for Moldova.
“It is much more important at what price Moldova buys gas in winter, in the first and fourth quarters”, said the head of Moldovagaz. He recalled the example of Ukraine, which in January of this year “bought gas at $385, and Moldova – at $240”.
According to the Ministry of Economic Development of Ukraine, the average gas purchase price in the first quarter was $290, and in January Ukraine bought gas at $317.
Local elections will be held in Moldova on October 20, and parliamentary elections will also be held in four single-mandate constituencies. The presidential election will be next year.
Earlier it was reported that Ukraine and Moldova planned to import gas from Romania. Ukrtransgaz notes that for Ukraine and Moldova this project is of strategic importance, because by diversifying the gas supply routes, both states will increase the reliability and uninterrupted supply of fuel to their consumers.
