Ukrtransgaz completed the injection season on October 20, 2020. The Ukrainian UGS facilities have accumulated a record gas reserve over the past 10 years – 28.3 billion cubic meters. Currently, the gas storage facilities are completing the neutral period one by one and are switching to the mode of withdrawing natural gas from UGS facilities, the press service reports.
Domestic companies store 18.3 billion cubic meters at the end of the injection season. This is completely enough for Ukraine to pass the heating season without interruption. Over the past five years, Ukrainian companies have withdrawn from 7.6 to 12.5 billion cubic meters per year from UGS facilities.
The volume of natural gas injected into Ukraine's underground storage facilities for 10 months of this year is 16.8 billion cubic meters, which is 5% less than in 2019.
Of these, residents pumped 8.3 billion cubic meters of gas, 53% less than last year. Along with a decrease in gas storage volumes by Ukrainian companies, domestic gas storage facilities are actively replenished by non-residents. Since the beginning of 2020, they have pumped 8.5 billion cubic meters of gas into the underground storage facilities, which is 4.2 times higher than last year's figures.
As of 01.11.2020, foreign traders store 10 billion cubic meters of gas in the Customs warehouse mode. This is 4 times more compared to the same period last year. Of these, 5.8 billion cubic meters were accumulated in the "short-haul" mode.
Resident companies store 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas in the Customs warehouse mode, 3.7 times less than in 2019. Of these, the volume of gas transferred to UGS facilities in the “short-haul” mode is 0.3 billion cubic meters.
Since October in Ukraine was relatively warm, gas withdrawal from UGS facilities was not high. Over the last decade of October, 0.2 billion cubic meters of gas were withdrawn from gas storage facilities.
As of November 1, 2020, the natural gas stocks in underground storage facilities are 28.1 billion cubic meters of gas. This is 30% more than last year.
“We have completed the 2020 injection season, reaching 28.3 billion cubic meters of gas. This is the highest level in the last decade. For the first time in the history of our gas storage facilities, a significant contribution – 10 billion cubic meters – was made by non-residents. What factors primarily influenced this result? The first one is the favorable situation on the EU market and the lack of gas storage capacity in Europe. The second one is competitive conditions for non-resident companies: tariffs for gas storage in Ukraine are at least two times lower than in neighboring countries,” said Serhii Pereloma, General Director of Ukrtransgaz.
