Ukraine has finished the heating season with high gas reserves over the past 30 years

Ukraine has used 5.98 billion cubic meters of natural gas from underground gas storages (UGS) since the beginning of the heating season 2019-2020. This was reported by the press service of Naftogaz.

As of April 7, 2020, more than 15.8 billion cubic meters of gas were stored in Ukrainian UGS facilities – almost 45% more than a year ago.

Gas reserves in the UGSF of Ukraine by the end of the heating season 2019-2020 – the highest rate over the last 30 years. The closest to these volumes was the heating season of 2008-2009. Then the reserves amounted to 15.4 billion cubic meters of gas.

Weather conditions made it possible to stop gas withdrawal from the UGSF and start the gas injection season in March, while in 2019 the injection began in April.

“We have created significant reserves of natural gas in storage in case of transit stoppage in 2020. This strengthened the negotiating position of Ukraine in talks on a new transit contract and helped to achieve favorable conditions for Ukraine. Today we are faced with a new challenge for energy stability, but significant gas reserves in the underground gas storage facilities will help us overcome this crisis”, said Andriy Kobolyev, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine.

To recap, the price of imported gas in March fell by 8.8%.

Earlier it was reported that by the next heating season it was necessary to pump 2-3 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
