The Ukrainian gas transmission system is ready to pump biomethane into the network in 2022

Pavlo Stanchak, Deputy General Director for Development and Transformation of the Ukrainian GTS Operator, outlined the prospects for the development of biomethane production in Ukraine and when qualitative changes can be expected, during the Seventh Ukrainian Gas Forum.

He noted that daft law No.5464 "On alternative fuels", adopted by the Verkhovna Rada, gives a powerful start for the reorientation of the country towards the use of environmentally friendly fuels.

“For the GTS Operator of Ukraine, it is vital that biomethane can be transported through the Ukrainian gas transmission system and potentially exported to the EU countries, where it is in significant demand. Prospects for the development of production and transportation of biomethane are more accessible in the short term, in contrast to hydrogen. I can say that next year we could already take biomethane from the network, provided that all the necessary technical and regulatory requirements are met. Due to the ramification of the Ukrainian GTS, producers of this type of fuel will be able to connect to gas networks in most of the territory of Ukraine. We already have a preliminary application for connection to the grid from one of the biomethane producers. We are very interested that there are as many of them as possible,” Pavlo Stanchak noted during his speech.

Biomethane can significantly contribute to the decarbonization of the economy by making renewable gases available to transport, industry and energy. There are examples in the EU when GTS operators purchase biomethane for their own needs to decarbonize energy transportation activities.

Earlier the GTSOU and Ukrtransgaz agreed to develop the hydrogen market in Ukraine.
