Hungary signed a new contract with Gazprom on gas supplies bypassing Ukraine

On September 27 in Budapest, Hungary signed a new long-term contract with the Russian Gazprom for the supply of gas bypassing Ukraine. In response, the Foreign Ministry decided to postpone the meeting with the Hungarians and apply to the European Commission, Hromadske reports.

There, the decision of Hungary was called "exclusively political" and "economically unjustified." In particular, the ministry points out that it is more profitable for Hungary to receive gas in transit through the gas transportation system of Ukraine, which allows an uninterrupted supply of gas to European countries by the shortest route.

However, the ministry called the country's decision taken "to please the Kremlin and to the detriment of Ukraine's national interests."

“We note with sadness that this decision is detrimental to the positive results and tendencies in bilateral Ukrainian-Hungarian relations, for the achievement of which a lot of efforts and energy have been made personally by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Hungary Dmytro Kuleba and Peter Siyarto,” the Foreign Ministry notes.

The ministry decided to postpone the meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Hungarian Commission on Economic Cooperation, which was to take place on September 29-30 in Budapest under the general leadership of the foreign ministers of the two countries.

Besides, the Ukrainian side will turn to the European Commission to assess the compliance of the new Hungarian-Russian gas agreement with European energy legislation.

As reported, Hungary agreed on the terms of a new agreement on gas supplies from Russia.
