The Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the development of biomethane production
The Verkhovna Rada adopted Draft Law No.5464 "On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine" On Alternative Fuels "regarding the development of biomethane production," Interfax-Ukraine reports.
285 MPs supported this decision.
The law regulates the concept of ‘biomethane’ as ‘biogas’, which, in terms of its physical and technical characteristics, corresponds to the regulatory legal acts on natural gas for supply to gas distribution and gas transmission networks or for use as a motor fuel.
Besides, the document provides for the creation of a register of biomethane for accounting in the system, establishes the procedure for the formation of guarantees of the origin of biomethane.
According to the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, the potential for biomethane production in Ukraine is 8 billion cubic meters per year, which corresponds to 25% of domestic gas consumption.
The Head of the GTS Operator Serhii Makohon also said the adoption of the law would help the company expand cooperation with international partners in the supply of ‘clean’ gas.
“What does this mean for the Ukrainian GTS? That there is a potential for filling the network with renewable gas. Transportation of biomethane does not require additional costs for the reconstruction or construction of new facilities. The use of biomethane coincides with the strategy of gradual replacement of natural gas, the strategy of the Ukrainian GTS Operator of a gradual transition to the transportation of renewable gases, the Green Transition strategy,” he said.
As reported, the waste processing plant in Zhytomyr will be able to heat 30% of the city.
