In January-May 2020, the total flow of natural gas from the EU countries amounted to 5.2 billion cubic meters, which is 30% (1.2 billion cubic meters) more than the same period last year. This was reported by the press service of OGTSU.
It is also 28% higher than the average in 2016-2019.
In the first five months of 2020, imports from Slovakia amounted to 2.8 billion cubic meters of gas (+ 25% compared to the same period last year), from Hungary – 1.6 billion cubic meters (+ 38%), from Poland – 0.8 billion cubic meters (+ 40%).
The indicated import volumes also include a backhaul, which became available for the first time since the beginning of this year: from Hungary – 642 million cubic meters and from Poland – 497 million cubic meters.
In particular, according to the operational data of Operator of the GTS of Ukraine LLC, 1.373 billion cubic meters of natural gas were imported to Ukraine in May. This is 13% less (205 million cubic meters) than in May 2019. At the same time, this is 18% (or 206 million cubic meters) more than in April 2020.
“Such a drop in imports in May compared to last year's similar indicator is explained by high load of underground gas storages in Ukraine. And the increase in gas supplies from the EU countries in May compared to April 2020 is the increase in demand for a new short-haul service, which the Ukrainian GTS Operator introduced in early 2020,” the statement said.
802 million cubic meters of gas have been transported via short-haul in Ukraine since the beginning of the year, in fact, 100% of which was uploaded by traders into the UGS in the "Customs warehouse" mode.
Imported gas comes exclusively from the EU countries.
