President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he hoped to get guarantees of energy security for Ukraine during the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Ukraine, according to Ekonomichna Pravda.
“I hope that Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin will reach a certain agreement, with which she will arrive in Kyiv. These can be guarantees for Ukraine. For example, the fact that Russia will agree to the supply of minimum volumes of gas that will be transported by the Ukrainian gas pipeline system to the EU,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with the Normandy Four countries and the United States.
Zelenskyy noted that Angela Merkel is guided by pragmatic considerations in relations with Russia, but he considers this approach too lenient.
“She wants to avoid any surprises during the elections to the Bundestag on September 26th. Russia, as before, has influence. My personal opinion is that the chancellor is promoting a very delicate balancing act. It's too soft for me,” he added.
As a reminder, on July 21, the United States and Germany announced that they had officially agreed to complete the construction of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, having published a joint declaration with promises to Ukraine.
The European Parliament turned to the EU institutions because of Nord Stream 2.
The Office of the President of Ukraine, following a meeting with the representative of the German Foreign Ministry, said that Germany is ready for Ukraine-initiated consultations on Nord Stream 2.
Germany has appointed a commissioner for the transit of gas through Ukraine.
As reported, Gazprom named the possible volume of supplies via Nord Stream 2 in 2021.
