JSC Ukrtransnafta launched a new route of the oil pipeline

JSC Ukrtransnafta launched a new route of the oil pipeline – the bypass section of the oil pipeline Brody-Derzhkordon (Druzhba main oil pipeline) and minimized the risk of pollution of the Stryi water intake of fresh groundwater, one of the largest water intakes in Lviv region and the Western region of Ukraine, the press service reports.

During the relocation of the oil pipeline, a complex of construction, installation, welding and insulating works was carried out. The total length of each line of the constructed oil pipeline is 11.7 km. The route is laid mainly along watersheds, which practically eliminates the risk of damage to the oil pipeline under the influence of natural factors and pollution of water bodies.

“The old oil pipeline was built 60 years ago and put into operation in 1962. During this time, it has worn out. We take care in advance of the modernization of facilities that may affect the environment. Today, oil is already being pumped through the new branch, and the old branch no longer poses threats to the environment and residents of the Lviv region,” Ihor Pyta, Deputy General Director of Ukrtransnafta in the Western Region said.

The Brody- Derzhkordon oil pipeline in the section km 157 - km 165 runs along the Stryi river bed and partially passes within the framework of the second sanitary protection zone of the Stryi fresh groundwater intake.

The water intake provides drinking water to more than 500 thousand consumers - some of the residents in Lviv, residents of Truskavets, Morshyn, Stryii and Drohobych.

In the event of damage to the oil pipeline in this section, there was a risk of oil escape and pollution of the river with oil entering under the channel structures of the water intake.

To recap, Ukrtransnafta transported Algerian oil for the first time.
