At its meeting on Wednesday, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the concept of a state target program for a fair transformation of Ukraine's coal regions for the period up to 2030, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, the approval of the program will be the official start for the processes of gradual diversification of the single-industry economies of coal cities, creating new opportunities for residents of these territories.
“Next year, with the help of the state budget and with the support of international partners, we are starting the implementation of the first pilot transformation projects. Long-term projects will reduce the dependence of local economies on coal mining,” the Prime Minister said.
The concept covers about 850 thousand inhabitants, located in 25 territorial communities of coal regions.
