We've all been walking on money: Andrii Hrynenko told how to earn by processing household waste in Ukraine

However, this requires the modernization of legislation and the fulfilment of existing norms. This is stated in the blog of Andrii Hrynenko, CEO of Clear Energy, on Liga.Net.

He recalled that, according to the Ministry of Regional Development, more than 15 million tons of household waste was generated in Ukraine in 2020, and the area of official landfills increased by 500 hectares, reaching 9 thousand hectares. About 20% of the 6 thousand officially registered landfills in Ukraine have problems, in other words, they are overloaded or do not comply with environmental safety standards.

At the same time, the issue of garbage has been turned into a resource, in neighboring Poland: for 15 years now, they have been producing fuel from solid domestic waste, which is more than 4 million tons per year.

According to Hrynenko, it is necessary to modernize the legislation to make it possible in Ukraine.

“The legal framework for waste-management is absolutely outdated because its basis is the 1998 law “On Waste”. Its text does not contain most of the modern international terms regarding waste management, because at the end of the 20th century they did not exist. The 2000 Law “On Alternative Fuels” lacks the concept of RDF and SRF. And these are also renewable energy sources. This is not only our heating and energy independence but also opportunities for regular financial receipts,” explained the Head of Clear Energy.

According to the assessment of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency, the potential of the industry is 4 billion m3 annually, which is 5 million MWh of electricity. This is an opportunity to provide electricity to residents of more than 115 thousand apartments all year round.

However, as of the beginning of 2021, only 19 landfills had biogas extraction systems and cogeneration plants operating, with a capacity of 26 MW.

The result of outdated norms is that investors who are ready to invest in the development of "green" energy create projects at their own peril and risk.

“As you can see, there is a huge potential. But so far, because of our short-sightedness, we've all been walking on money, and do not even try to use these resources for good. It's time to wake up and stop treating waste as evil. With proper management and working current legislation, waste management is a profitable business that can create new tax revenues and jobs,” Hrynenko summed up.

To recap, modern Ukrainian-made gasifiers, which make it is possible to process wood chips to generate electricity and heat, are now available under the "Available loans 5-7-9%" program due to the cooperation between Ganza (part of Clear Energy Group ) and Ukrgasbank.
