US wind farms produced more electricity than hydroelectric power plants for the first time

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), in 2019, wind farms for the first time produced more electricity than hydropower. It is reported by Renen.

US wind farms produced approximately 300 million MWh of energy. This is 26 million MWh more than was generated by hydroelectric power plants.

“The wind is currently the main renewable source of electricity generation in the country, previously this position was occupied by hydropower”, the EIA reports.

According to the EIA, at the end of 2019, the installed wind power capacity was 103 GW, with 77% commissioned in the last decade. In the United States, 80 GW of hydropower plants operate today, and over the past ten years only 2 GW has been added.

It was previously reported that in 2019, Spain was ahead of European countries in installing a wind farm on land.
