Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM) on August 20, 2020 registered a new record for the total load of Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) facilities, which amounted to 11.7 GW, Ecotown reports.
Within thirty minutes, large-scale solar (including rooftop) and wind generation facilities covered 46.5% of total electricity consumption, the country's system operator AEMO said in a statement.
“The new record reflects the rapid transformation of the generation capacity in the national grid,” said Alex Wonhas, AEMO's design director. “Over the past six months, five new wind farms and solar power plants with a total capacity of 580 MW were commissioned, which became NEM participants, and projects for the construction of generating facilities based on renewable energy sources with a total generating capacity of 1785 MW are being implemented.”
The previous maximum VRE generation load, which amounted to 11.3 GW, was recorded in November 2019.
AEMO's recently released 2020 Integrated System Plan (ISP) predicts that more than 26 GW of new VRE generation facilities will need to be built to replace coal-fired generation (by 2040, it plans to decommission 63% of coal-fired power).
Earlier it was reported that due to hurricanes, wind farms in the UK broke records in electricity generation in August.
